XY GPS FAQ

Battery life:

The rechargeable battery of the XY GPS will last about 3 months using only Bluetooth, or about 24 hours using only GPS.

Fortunately the way it works is that Bluetooth helps reduce the battery drain from GPS. As long as the XY GPS can connect to your mobile device via Bluetooth, it will reduce that drain on the battery by switching to Bluetooth mode. So how quickly the battery drains will be dependent upon how long the XY GPS has to remain in GPS mode. Using both modes under normal circumstances, the battery should last between 2 and 5 days (typically about 3 or 4) before needing to be recharged.

The battery will not be replaceable, however we will make a new XY GPS unit available at a reduced cost and your lifetime service data plan will be transferable to the new unit.

The XY GPS unit will still work plugged in even after the battery is worn down after many charges.

Carriers:

The service is paid for through XY Find It and a plan from another carrier won’t be necessary, regardless of the country the user is in.

Coverage:

The XY GPS can gather GPS data anywhere a GPS signal is available worldwide. To send the GPS data to our servers, it must have GSM cellular reception.

The most complete GSM coverage map in North America is the T-Mobile coverage map, which you'll find here: https://www.t-mobile.com/coverage-map.html

Global Coverage map coming soon.

Dimensions:

  • Diameter: 4.7 cm (1.8 in) at the edges, 5.6 cm (2.2 in) at the corners
  • Depth: 1 cm (0.39 in) at the edge, 1.2 cm (0.47 in) at the dome.
  • Weight: 31.18 g (1.1 oz)

Obsolescence/Expected Duration of Usefulness:

The XY GPS has no planned obsolescence, however the GSM cellular network is going to be replaced over time, and the current XY GPS will not be functional with anything other than GSM. Later models will be compatible with contemporary network technology.

Pets:

The XY GPS is about the size of a large pocket watch, although it’s much lighter. We are developing an adapter for use on collars so that it doesn’t have to dangle, which is especially useful for smaller pets.

Plans:

The lifetime service plan is transferable to new units, and replacement units can be purchased at a discount.

Reporting Interval:

This hasn’t yet been finalized and will be optimized for battery life, however the user will be able to choose from three different settings. This will range from rapid reporting every few minutes for real-time accuracy to occasional reporting every few hours for a longer battery life.
